3D Storytelling Conference 2012

22-23 March, Ravensbourne, London
Moving your story into the third dimension

How can you enhance 3D storytelling across genres and platforms?

Whether you are a production company, freelancer, ad agency or in gaming, you need to know how to use 3D intelligently and creatively.

The technology is now ready to take 3D to the next level – beyond a gimmick and embedded in the way audiences engage with content. You now have the opportunity to learn about the innovative ways the industry is using 3D to enhance audience experience.

3D Storytelling 2012 is the leading UK film and broadcast industry conference that solely focuses on 3D.

You have the chance to mix with over 500 film, TV and media professionals and hear from speakers such as John Cassy, Director Sky 3D and Chris Parks, Stereographer (Jack The Giant Killer, Pirates of Caribbean)

This year you can interact in our 3D Gaming section, 3D Research area and a 3D Futureslabs room. In partnership with FilmClub, you can also hear from research analysing children’s opinions about 3D.

Cisco - NVI

Ravensbourne is founding partner in the Cisco ‘National Virtual Incubator’ (NVI) together with Greenwich Council and Birmingham Science Park Aston. The NVI network will connect research centres, higher education establishments and science parks over the academic JANET network, beginning with founding partners Ravensbourne, Greenwich Council and Birmingham Science Park Aston.

A further 12 nodes will be added over the coming year and Cisco aims to connect 100, including advanced videoconferencing facilities by 2016. The NVI is part of network company Cisco’s investment of $500m over the next five years, and will provide what the firm calls “a public technology network which promises to stimulate entrepreneurship by connecting physical sites through IT infrastructure”.

Artificially Intelligent Learning

With funding from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Ravensbourne is developing a prototype for a 'Conversational Learning Environment' (CLE) integrating with its existing virtual learning environment, Moodle 2.0.

The CLE will uses a form of artificial intelligence, created using what is known as object-oriented programming. It matches learning content to learner requests, similar to search engine requests.

An artificial intelligence ‘bot’ will be able to address different styles of learning, such as learners who are more media-based or those who prefer to converse. Students will be able to interact with difference ‘bots’ designed by animation students. Watch this space to hear more!

Applied Technologies on the road

The MSc Applied Technologies team have been very busy. Last week, students Kyle Kirkpatrick and Laura White exhibited Altered States at our campus at Greenwich Peninsula.

From 1-8 February,
Arkitypo – the applied research 3D typography project with johnson banks - exhibits at global engineering firm Arup’s offices in central London and form part of Arup’s Penguin Pool tonight, 2 Feb. The Arkitypo project is also the subject of February’s edition of Monograph – the monthly supplement of Creative Review, available exclusively to subscribers.

Then the team head straight to Kinetica Art Fair
on 9 Feb, together with our Computational Designer in Residence Evan Raskob, to exhibit work as part of the
Time, Transformation and Energy exhibition. Please visit any or all of the exhibitions if you can.

Sundance Film Festival

Sundance is coming to London this year and as part of the festival, Sundance London, in partnership with Greenwich Council and Ravensbourne, have launched a short film competition.

The brief is "Story of Our Time", celebrating the festival links to Greenwich, the place where time began. Robert Redford, Founder and President of Sundance Institute said: "We are living through arguably some of the most profound years of rapid change in our lifetimes. Reflections and stories from filmmakers around the unifying theme of 'Story of Our Time', we hope will open a window into both the challenge and inspiration of these days".

A four-day festival takes place at The O2 where the winning short film will be premiered. For more information click here.

Ravensbourne 48-Hour Film Challenge

Ravensbourne hosted a hugely successful 48 hour film challenge 25 - 27 January 2012 with almost 300 students taking part from across disciplines at Ravensbourne, including digital film, fashion and graphic design students.

Around 15 film shorts were made (each 3 minutes long) over an intense 48 hour period, with most students filming on location. Some crews built sets in that time, and one film consisted of a musical using original music and multi-tracked sound.

The standard of film-making was very high, and awards ceremony and screening topped off the event in style. You can see the films for yourself by clicking here.

M&S partnership continues

Now in its third year, we have launched our M&S sustainability and innovation project with Ravensbourne product design students. Working with senior packaging technologists at M&S, Ravensbourne students will develop sustainable packaging for several product lines including bacon, single desserts pots and biscuits. Winning students will be offered placements at M&S and will hopefully see their ideas taken to store. Last year’s student winners were Nicola Saunders and Jack Raison.

And finally...

Ravensbourne2012 – save the date!

This year's degree show will take place from 12-14 June, and we want to bring as many delegates and industry professionals to the event as possible.

The overall concept for this year’s event is ‘Light’. Light plays an important role across all disciplines at Ravensbourne. This idea can manifest itself in many different forms, ranging from something understated, austere and natural to something experimental, theatrical and avant-garde. Light can be used to enhance, alter and create an atmosphere within a space.

It promises to be a very exciting event, and we do hope you can join us for it!
